Respirator fit testing
A respirator only protects you if it is properly selected, fitted, worn and maintained. We provide a short classroom program on respiratory protection at your workplace, followed by individual fit testing.
Two ways to fit test
- Quantitative: works for all tight-fitting masks, including disposable, half-face and full-face. It gives an objective, numerical result called a fit factor.
- Qualitative: relies on the wearer's sense of smell or taste to detect a test agent leaking past the face seal during a set of exercises.
What's covered
Our program follows CSA Z94.4, Selection, Care and Use of Respirators, and is site-specific where applicable.
- Roles and responsibilities
- Hazard assessment
- Respirator selection
- Use of respirators, including putting on, taking off and seal checks
- Cleaning, inspection, maintenance and storage
- Health surveillance of respirator users
- Fit test
How often
We recommend fit testing every year and refresher training at least every two years. We can also help you adapt a respirator program policy for your health and safety manual.
