Traffic control safety training
Traffic control persons (TCPs) must receive written and oral instructions about their duties under the Construction Projects regulation. This training covers how to control traffic safely through work zones.
Why traffic control matters
- To protect construction workers and the public by regulating traffic flow
- To stop traffic when the work requires it, and otherwise keep it moving at reduced speeds
- To let construction proceed safely and efficiently
- To give public traffic priority over construction equipment
Working safely as a TCP
- Stand the correct distance from the work area, off the travelled part of the road, and always face oncoming traffic
- Don't get distracted by co-workers or pedestrians. If you must talk to a driver, stay at your post and keep it brief
- Don't direct traffic in more than one lane in the same direction
- Don't direct traffic where the posted speed limit is more than 90 km/h
